Embodying Climate Change
Interdisciplinary Workshop
Call for Papers

Climate crisis is one of the leading global threats. But it often seems very abstract, one cannot easily sense climate change on a daily basis. This workshop aims to focus on how climate change affects our minds and bodies in different parts of the world. It asks how people can see, touch, smell, hear or feel climate change and what influences this. We invite interdisciplinary contributions that study how people experience climate change daily and how they make sense of it. Are these positive or negative experiences? We welcome submissions that focus on varied aspects of global and local environmental change, that include – but are not limited to – how people adapt to or rebel against pollution, heat, draughts, fires, floods, raising water levels, the loss of biodiversity, anxiety and depression, migration. The aim of this two-day workshop is to offer participants the opportunity to think critically about what it means to study the embodiment of climate change and how to communicate this to different kinds of academic and non-academic audiences.

The notifications of acceptance will be sent out in April. Participants are expected to submit their papers ahead of the workshop. The final paper can take the form of an academic article (up to 6 000 words), but we also encourage submissions that engage with non-textual forms of representation, e.g. drawings, maps, photographs, video or audio clips, etc. These will be circulated among all workshop participants before the event. During the workshop – which will take place on the 20-21st of September 2023 on site in Poznan– participants will be expected to both present their own research as well as comment on another presentation.
The workshop has some funding available for participants’ travel and accommodation expenses. Further details will be circulated upon notification of acceptance.
